• Overeating later in the day
• Weight gain (obesity)
• Low daily energy
• Acidity and digestive issues
At Diaplus Multispeciality Hospital, Salem, we encourage you to start your day with a healthy, balanced breakfast to fuel your body and protect your health.

Experts say the first assignment of any school day is for mom and dad — make sure your students eat breakfast.
“Kids need calories after fasting at night,” says Mayo Clinic pediatrician Dr. Vandana Bhide. “Studies show that kids who eat breakfast actually learn better than kids who don’t eat breakfast.”
Dr. Bhide says an ideal breakfast is one with a low glycemic index that will slowly and consistently provide glucose to the brain throughout the morning. “Low glycemic foods that do not cause a spike and then a quick drop in blood sugar are better than processed foods that are high in sugar, such as doughnuts, muffins or sugary cereals.”
In this back-to-school Mayo Clinic Minute, Dr. Bhide discusses more benefits of breakfast and offers five brain-powering meal ideas.

On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about the potential cognitive and energy benefits of fasting in the morning. The study discussed was with 24 active women who fasted, ate small or large breakfast prior to exercising in the morning. It was found that the fasting group had improved cognitive performance and more energy later in the day, although they had more hunger and were less relaxed prior to lunch. Intermittent fasting increases ketones and prevents inflammation in the brain, which can lead to better clarity and energy throughout the morning. The women who fasted felt these effects subjectively and objectively with cognitive tasks; however, they were not as relaxed because they were hungry before lunch. Because this study regulated the time for lunch, the women were not able to listen to their bodies on the proper time to break their fast, leading to these unwanted side effects. Check out the video for more in depth information on how to fast in the morning to maximize brain performance and minimize stress!
